Fish Hard!
FishHead Outdoors
Even with high water levels the walleye bite is on at Lake Pueblo! Lake Pueblo water levels are extremely high closing the South Boat Ramp, however the walleye are still putting the feedbags on. The bass fishing has seemed to slow down from a week ago, but the carp fishing has only gotten better. An occasional wiper is still being caught, however with little consistency. The bite seems to be changing from day to day, along with changing throughout the day. The walleye are in schools so when you find one active fish, stay there for a while and put the grind on those fish. The walleye seem to be moving throughout the day so when the bite stops or slows down, move depth or location to get back on the active fish. Fish Hard! FishHead Outdoors

The fishing remains good on Lake Pueblo for walleye, bass, and trout with the occasional wiper being caught. The walleye fishing has been best the first and last few hours of light, with the bite getting tougher as the sun gets higher in the sky. Traditional walleye presentations have been working well jigging twister-tails or live-bait rigs. The bass fishing has been getting more consistent as the water temps climb, with the best action in shallower water around cover. Some nice size trout in the 3 and 4 lb range have been showing up in the mid to high water column, 15 ft and shallower while trolling. The carp seem to be done spawning and are now cruising the shore-lines which makes them accessible to the fisherman. Fish Hard! FishHead Outdoors As the weather warms, Lake Pueblo walleye fishing just seems to be getting better! Lake Pueblo walleye fishing has been great with lots of fish and some keeper walleye mixed in the bunch. Pueblo walleye have been hanging out in smaller schools and constantly seem to be on the move, so if you are not graphing fish than move. Where the walleye bite may be in the morning can change in the matter of just a couple hours, so stay on the move to stay on the walleye. Depth and presentations have been changing as fast as the walleye have been moving. So the rule of thumb is if your graphing fish but not getting hits then keep changing lures and presentations until you get a bite. Most of the walleye have been on the bottom or suspending just off the bottom, so your normal walleye fishing techniques have been working well, jigging and live-bait rigs. Fish Hard! FishHead Outdoors As spring progresses the trout fishing in Colorado changes from attractor lures and faster presentation to lures that match the hatch and slower presentations. On Spinney Mt Reservoir, the trout fishing remains good with the average trout going large 20 to 21 inches and around 3.5 pounds. Trout are being caught using three primary methods of fishing, trolling, jigging, and fly fishing. Slower trolling speeds with natural colored plugs like rainbow and crawdad colors trolled shallower in 12 to 18 ft of water has been working well. Drifting and casting with tube jigs next to weed beds has been doing good with the best colors being natural colors imitating crawdads or small rainbows trout. Stillwater fly fishing has been doing well with more insect hatches occurring as the weather warms and the weed beds become more established with the best fly patterns being chironomids, midges, pheasant-tail, scuds, and leeches. Trout seem to be orienting around weed beds and shore lines, so focus your time there. The trout seem to be roaming in small dispensed wolf packs so when you hook into one, make sure to watch your other lines. Lake Pueblo trout fishing has been fair to good from the shore line, with the occasional boater landing one. Worms, shrimp, worms and marshmallows, and powerbait seem to be the baits of choice. Fish Hard! FishHead Outdoors Game On with ice fishing in March and Colorado trout on Antero Reservoir! Last Saturday’s crew got the job done icing 20 trout in just the first few hours of daylight. The fish know spring is coming and the ice will be leaving Colorado soon, so the bite is on! Bright colored tube jigs were the hot ticket tipped with your favorite bait, meal worm, waxworm, or shrimp. As usual this ice season the first couple hours of daylight was best with an aggressive trout bite, and slowed to subtle hits as the day progressed. If you’re looking for fish on Antero, put foot to ice and get away from the crowds. Special Thanks to our crew Saturday for getting the job done! As spring creeps our way the Colorado ice fishing bite is fast and furious! Antero Reservoir is fishing excellent for eater size trout averaging 17 inches and around 2.25 lbs. As soon as there is first light, the fish our putting the feed bags on and aggressive eating. Last Friday’s crew put a real hurt’n on the fish, icing well into the 30 count with action so fast we were literally running from rod to rod trying to keep up with the bite! Small tube jigs and hand-tied ice jigs were the hot ticket in both bright colors and natural colors tipped with your favorite bait, meal worm, waxworm, or shrimp. Special Thanks to our Friday crew for getting the job done! Antero Reservoir is ice fishing good! If you’re willing to put foot to ice and cover some ground, you can be well rewarded for your efforts. Look for areas that don’t have high traffic and start there. Due to this crazy Colorado weather the ice conditions can vary greatly from 12-14 inches where the snow has stayed on the lake to 5-7 inches where the snow has melted off the lake. To know for sure what you’re standing on check the ice often with your auger. The water conditions are cloudy in Antero and we found bright colored ice jigs and tubes to be working best tipped with your favorite bait, wax worm, mealworm, or shrimp. Both the dead-stick presentation and active jigging presentation work, with location seeming to be more of a key than presentation. Have Fun and Fish Hard! The ice fishing season in Colorado is in full effect, time to get your Fish On! Antero is consistently ice fishing good with numbers of trout averaging around 20 fish a trip. The trout have been averaging 14 to 17 inches with a few bigger fish seen every ice trip. Antero’s trout seem to be constantly on the move and swimming in small dispensed schools, so when one fish passes through the area there’s a good chance his friends are around. Be careful with your ice rods and tend to them obsessively, for every ice trip I've had a savvy fish steal an ice rod down the hole while tending to another hook up! Not all is lost when this happens, often quick reactions can recovery the ice rod and along with the savvy fish. Get to the hole quickly and stare down to see if you can locate the shiny reel in the vegetation. If so, drill a hole directly above your lost ice reel and use another rod to snag either the bale on the reel, the line, or the rod itself. Slowly reel in your stolen ice rod so you don’t lose the savvy fish that stole it to begin with and teach that fish a lesson, no free meals here. If you are unable to locate your shiny reel then quickly drop another line down the hole you lost your ice rod and see if you can snag the line with the fish on it. Often the stolen ice rod will sink to the bottom and the fish will swim in circles around the lost ice rod. With another line down the hole, there is a chance the savvy fish could swim right into your free line and you can recovery your stolen ice rod with the fish still attached. If these two methods fail, then start drilling holes in a radius around the hole the ice rod was stolen and continue the described recovery techniques above. This method works best in shallow water and the faster you can react the better likelihood of recovering your stolen ice rod. Thanks for Reading and Check Out an Example of Ice Rod Recovery in the Pic Below! Ice fishing madness is here in Colorado, but it doesn't come easy. Be on your toes at Antero Reservoir for when you find fish it’s often coupled with the adrenaline charged rush of sprinting after bent ice rods in hopes of snagging the rod in time to catch the fish before it’s too late! And the last thing you see is the butt of the ice rod as it dives into the frozen abyss! It’s not easy to find the fish, feast or famine seems to be the trend.
The trout at Antero seem to be moving in small dispensed schools, so when you find one fish the chances are there’s more around. Small brightly colored ice jigs and tubes have been producing consistently tipped with your favorite bait: wax worm, mealworm, shrimp, or earthworm. Thanks for Reading and Fish Hard!

AuthorFishing is not a hobby, it's my lifestyle. If I'm not on the water, I'm thinking about being on the water. Obviously obsessed, the fishing journey has carried me across the Rocky Mountains eventually across the states, where I encountered the term "FishHead" for the first time. "FishHead" - a person who is completely consumed by the thoughts of fishing; an incurable sickness caused by fishing that consumes a person during all awake hours and usually persists throughout the sleep cycle.
