Walleye fishing in the fall can be one of the best bites in Colorado. Most of Colorado’s front-range lakes have good populations of walleye with a strong foundation of forage fish, shad. This shad foundation is the key to finding active walleye in the fall. The shad colonize into huge bait balls which creates a buffet party for almost everything in the lake like walleye, wiper, carp, spotted bass, etc! Good electronics play an important role in finding these shad schools. And when you do, it seems like you can see nature unfold on your graph as predatory fish have a chomp party on these bait balls. Not every shad school has walleye feeding on them, so look for clear arches in the bait balls or suspended arches under the bait balls on your graph. Walleye can be extremely finicky feeders, so matching the shad hatch is important. Size does matter, along with color and presentation. As a rule of thumb when I’m trying to figure out the bite, I’ll try to match the hatch the best I can then with my second rod will do the extreme opposite. Sometimes the way to go is following the crowd so imitate the shad the best you can, other times separating your lure from the crowd is the hot ticket. Fish Hard! FishHead Outdoors |

AuthorFishing is not a hobby, it's my lifestyle. If I'm not on the water, I'm thinking about being on the water. Obviously obsessed, the fishing journey has carried me across the Rocky Mountains eventually across the states, where I encountered the term "FishHead" for the first time. "FishHead" - a person who is completely consumed by the thoughts of fishing; an incurable sickness caused by fishing that consumes a person during all awake hours and usually persists throughout the sleep cycle.
