With fly gear, large crawfish patterns and minnow colored streamers or woolly buggers twitched along shorelines can result in some aggressive strikes and big trout.

Fishing in Colorado during October can result in some of the biggest trout of the year. With winter approaching big trout are cruising the shorelines actively looking for food. A well presented tube jig, swimbait, or jerkbait worked along the shorelines can often tempt these fish into striking.

Our Colorado lakes are still producing quality trout and pike, but a little more work is needed to get into the action. The aggressive bite we saw just a few weeks ago has slowed down a bit with the water temps dropping more dramatically here recently due to the colder nights and shorter days. The best bite seems to be as the day progresses and the fish move into shallower weed beds to soak up the sun’s rays. We’ve had best results targeting shallower weed beds during mid-day in the 6 to 10 FOW with more active twitch presentations working both jerkbaits, swimbaits, and tubes. Natural colors have been producing best mainly trout and perch patterns for minnow baits, then crawfish and trout colors for tubes. I always keep a couple rods rigged with the same baits but in bright colors like firetiger or clown looking for those reaction strikes. Sometimes that bright color can produce some exciting results with a bigger fish or two. Big crawfish and leach patterns or big bright streamers have been working best with the fly gear. Spinney Mt Reservoir is still extremely mucked up with algae, so the traditional smaller patterns used in the past have been obsolete. Seems like the larger fly patterns have been doing better just because the fish can find them easier. With the fly gear I’ve been fishing more subtle approaches than the spin gear, using strike indicators with a slight twitch here and there. Thanks for Reading and FishOn! FishHead Outdoors The big trout bite continues in Colorado! Fall in Colorado provides a window of opportunity for the bigger trout. Winter can be tough times, and the bigger trout seem to have learned to put the feed on in the fall when food is more available. With the cooler water temperature everything seems to be on the move from the smaller minnow forage to the crawfish. Just a slight change in water temp can be just enough to change the fish's attitude. So keep an eye on your graph and when you see active fish cruising and start hooking up, pay attention to the water temp. This time of year, just a half of degree or so can be the difference in active fish and neutral fish. Stay on the move throughout the day so you can stay on the active fish. If the bite stops on a crawfish tube jig pattern then change to a jerkbait minnow pattern. The idea here is keep changing presentations and keep moving. Often the bite changes throughout the day and different fish will want different presentations. Thanks for Reading and Fish Hard! FishHead Outdoors The fall bite for big trout in Colorado is on! When the hours of sunlight decrease and the nights grow colder, the ingredients come together to trigger the bigger fish to start the feed for winter is coming. This time of year the trout are actively searching for food trying to stock up on calories for the winter months. Several presentations are working well including minnow patterns, crawfish patterns, and leach patterns depending on your tool of choice, spinning gear or fly gear. The fish’s mood has been changing throughout the day and without notice so change lures and presentations often. At times the trout preferred an active swimming minnow presentation worked in the mid to high water column, then the bite would die off and a slow jigging crawfish presentation popped through the weeds seemed to be the ticket. The big trout in our mountain lakes are nomads so if you are not on the bite and tried a few tactics, move spots. As the day progresses we consistently find that the active fish are on the move, so we do the same. Thanks for Reading and Fish Hard! FishHead Outdoors |
AuthorFishing is not a hobby, it's my lifestyle. If I'm not on the water, I'm thinking about being on the water. Obviously obsessed, the fishing journey has carried me across the Rocky Mountains eventually across the states, where I encountered the term "FishHead" for the first time. "FishHead" - a person who is completely consumed by the thoughts of fishing; an incurable sickness caused by fishing that consumes a person during all awake hours and usually persists throughout the sleep cycle.
