Colorado's ice fishing bite for pike continues! Big pike don't come easy through the ice during mid-winter in Colorado, however with some hard work and a bit of luck the big fish can still be tricked into feeding. As mid-winter comes along big pike can be difficult to locate and reluctant to feed even when you find them. Seems like the bigger pike are more hesitant to feed during mid-winter yet when conditions are right you can still trick a few into taking an easy meal like a suspended dead-bait. I've watched big pike come in and nose typical dead-baits then quickly loose interest. A quick down-sizing of baits and back down the hole, the same fish came in and instead of just nosing the bait decided the smaller bait was worth eating. So if your standard pike fishing methods aren't working for you when you know you're in the fish, then keep switching things up until you trigger a strike. It only takes one strike to turn a boring day of ice fishing into an unforgettable day on the ice!

Some of Colorado’s most popular ice fishing lakes for trout also hold some bigger toothier predators. So next time you’re gearing up for some fun-filled Colorado ice fishing for trout try putting together a larger rig with some beefier leader and big enough lures and baits to tempt a larger beast. If you’re sight fishing through the hut and see a big pike come passing through, you can quickly drop a larger rig and try to seal the deal with a lure large enough to create a strike from a bigger pike. As we all know the stories of big pike coming on small trout jigs through the ice, this is more the unusual event than the norm. So larger jigging Rapalas, bigger tube jigs, swimbaits, and soft-plastics, along with some larger dead-baits are a good start for putting together a bigger predatory rig for pike. You won’t see a big pike come passing through the hut every day, but when you do you’ll be ready!

AuthorFishing is not a hobby, it's my lifestyle. If I'm not on the water, I'm thinking about being on the water. Obviously obsessed, the fishing journey has carried me across the Rocky Mountains eventually across the states, where I encountered the term "FishHead" for the first time. "FishHead" - a person who is completely consumed by the thoughts of fishing; an incurable sickness caused by fishing that consumes a person during all awake hours and usually persists throughout the sleep cycle.
