Our Colorado lakes are still producing quality trout and pike, but a little more work is needed to get into the action. The aggressive bite we saw just a few weeks ago has slowed down a bit with the water temps dropping more dramatically here recently due to the colder nights and shorter days. The best bite seems to be as the day progresses and the fish move into shallower weed beds to soak up the sun’s rays. We’ve had best results targeting shallower weed beds during mid-day in the 6 to 10 FOW with more active twitch presentations working both jerkbaits, swimbaits, and tubes. Natural colors have been producing best mainly trout and perch patterns for minnow baits, then crawfish and trout colors for tubes. I always keep a couple rods rigged with the same baits but in bright colors like firetiger or clown looking for those reaction strikes. Sometimes that bright color can produce some exciting results with a bigger fish or two.
Big crawfish and leach patterns or big bright streamers have been working best with the fly gear. Spinney Mt Reservoir is still extremely mucked up with algae, so the traditional smaller patterns used in the past have been obsolete. Seems like the larger fly patterns have been doing better just because the fish can find them easier. With the fly gear I’ve been fishing more subtle approaches than the spin gear, using strike indicators with a slight twitch here and there.
