Colorado's ice fishing bite is on! Whether you are looking for trout through the ice or big predatory fish, Colorado's mountain lakes are capped with ice and fishing good! Tarryall Reservoir is one of the most popular ice fishing lakes near Colorado Springs and Denver, and this ice season doesn't disappoint with good to great action for trout through the ice. Another popular Colorado ice fishing lake is Eleven Mile Reservoir which is well known in Colorado for trophy pike and trout potential particularly during the ice season. Eleven Mile Reservoir requires a bit more skill and patience ice fishing, however the hard work ice fishing can pay off with big Colorado pike and trout. Giant fish roam the waters of Eleven Mile but their secrets are not easily revealed so drill a lot of holes in the ice and keep moving to stay on fish. Fish Hard, FishHead Outdoors |

December ice fishing in Colorado can offer some of the funnest ice fishing of the season with the added bonus of big fish potential. Colorado offers great ice fishing lakes for trout and lurking in some of these trout waters are big toothy predators like northern pike or lake trout. So on your next Colorado ice fishing excursion think about rigging an ice rod with some larger lures in hopes of tempting one of these big predators to come knocking!
Fish Hard, FishHead Outdoors Ice fishing Colorado pike can be challenging but the thrills of the catch is well worth the effort! Winter pike ice fishing in Colorado can be one of the best times to chase northerns and big northern pike. During early ice pike will scourer the shallows looking for an easy meal to fatten up for the long haul of the winter and aide with egg production for the spring spawn. Therefore winter pike seem to prefer subtle presentations with large baits so they can get a big reward for little effort. I prefer a run and gun technique for pike ice fishing in Colorado so if you don't see fish keep moving. Those fish that seem to be roaming for food will come and check out your lures if they're in the area. So drill a lot of holes and keep moving.
Fish Hard, FishHead Outdoors Colorado ice fishing for trophy pike really gets the heart pumping for big fish with big thrills! To tangle with these beasts takes lots of preparation and hard work, for the big pike don't come easy and early ice is a perfect time to target these toothy monsters. When the Colorado lakes become hard with ice, this signals the beginning of winter and triggers top predators like big pike to start actively looking to put the feed on. Winters can be difficult times with scarce food, so big pike take advantage of early ice to consume calories for winter and build their egg base for spawn in the spring. Don't be afraid to use big baits, for big baits attract big fish and big pike are looking for the calories early ice.
Fish Hard, FishHead Outdoors First ice fishing is here in Colorado on Eleven Mile Reservoir! We've been waiting for some safe ice fishing in Colorado and it's finally here on some of our high mountain lakes. Eleven Mile Reservoir is capped with ice, however be ware for there is only safe ice on Crosscreek at 5 inches. Most of Eleven Mile has 2.5-3 inches of ice that is on the softer-side, So Be Careful! Watch your step out there on Crosscreek for there is a pressure ridge that goes from hard 5 inches of ice to soft 3 inches of ice on the other side of the pressure ridge. Use ice chisels with the buddy system to constantly check ice conditions and throughout the day. For early ice is always a sketchy time when the ice conditions can change rapidly throughout the day and from day to day. Ice fishing Eleven Mile Reservoir has been fair for trout using small ice jigs in a variety of bright and natural colors tipped with your favorite ice bait wax worms, mealworms, shrimp, etc. The trout at Eleven Mile have been scattered and not very aggressive so smaller jigs and more subtle jigging presentations have worked best. Colorado walleye fishing is just getting better by the week. Now that stable warm water temps are here, the walleye bite has been consistently good with walleye being caught by a variety of techniques and locations. Seems like there are small groups of walleye spread throughout main lake structures like islands, points, mud flats, etc. Different groups of walleye are behaving differently but seems like there are a few fisher friendly walleye almost in every group you come across on your graph. Live bait finesse presentations have been working well like a twister-tail tipped with a crawler or a slip bobber rigged with a leech or crawler. Tubes and plastic swimbaits are also taking some nice walleye. The fish seem to be following the typical walleye behavior with low-light conditions like sunrise and sunset being the most active time for the walleye bite, with the fishing slowing down and the walleye moving deeper as the sun peaks. Fish Hard, FishHead Outdoors Everyday is a little different on the water but with this recent warm spell the Colorado walleye fishing is taking off! This doesn't mean the walleye come easy, for the ones we are looking for the "Keeps" are wise to many fisherman's tricks. However with perseverance and quick decisions in changing tackle and techniques, better than average walleye are consistently being boated. The walleye are changing moods and behaviors daily and throughout the day so pay close attention to your graph and ALL the info it's providing you so you can make the best decision on tackle and presentation based off the Fish's Attitude. If you see them jumping around on the graph then give them something to chase! If they look lazy and sluggish, then slow it down and give the walleye a chance to slurp it up.
Fish Hard FishHead Outdoors Lake Pueblo walleye fishing has been changing as quickly as the spring weather. However with some hard work and perseverance, keeper walleye are still being boated. The walleye seem to be moving quite a bit and appear to be dispensed in small schools. Finesse presentations have been working better than aggressive techniques like stickbaits. Fish Hard! AuthorFishing is not a hobby, it's my lifestyle. If I'm not on the water, I'm thinking about being on the water. Obviously obsessed, the fishing journey has carried me across the Rocky Mountains eventually across the states, where I encountered the term "FishHead" for the first time. "FishHead" - a person who is completely consumed by the thoughts of fishing; an incurable sickness caused by fishing that consumes a person during all awake hours and usually persists throughout the sleep cycle.
