The hard water is back on some of the lakes in Colorado, but watch your step. 11 Mile has 4 to 5 inches of ice on a good part of the lake, however keep your eyes open for soft and thin spots. There is anywhere from 2 to 8 inches of snow on the ice and visual spots that look pretty sketchy, so be safe and check the ice often with an ice chisel, spud bad, or auger. I found ice well over 5 inches on some areas of the lake and just 20 yards away the ice was under 4 inches and soft.
Ice fishing has been status quo for 11 Mile with the skilled and persistent fisherman catching some nice size trout from 17 to 20 inches. Small ice jigs and plastics have been working well tipped with either a wax worm or mealworm. The ice fisherman that stay on the move have been doing best, for the trout don’t appear to be running in schools right now.
